So, I was riding down the road, when I noticed that my motor was making a strange raspy noise.
At first the noise was very faint. I wasn't sure if was a real thing, or just my paranoia.
As I listened, the noise started to get louder.
I tucked in to see if I could locate the source. I didn't work.
Turned my head to look at the pipes, and instantly hear the roar of an nu-muffled expansion chamber.
I looked down and saw that the Toomey pipe had broken at the stinger, and the aluminum can was pointing down.
The end of the can only inches from the road.
Pulled over, used a bungee cord to tie the end of the can up, and limped the bike home.
Pulled the pipe, had a buddy weld it back together and add an extra brace to it.
Gave the pipe a quick coat of paint, and bolted it back on.
Since the rebuild, I put 492 km (306 miles) on the engine, and it's been running great.
My $10 still says that it'll hit 2000 km no problem.

In October of 2006, I bought a brand new Dodge Power Wagon.
It's been an awesome truck, in both the Summer and the Winter.
And one f*cked up week last September.
But, its' got 400,000 km (250,00 miles) on it, and it's getting a little tired.
It's going to need a minor service if it's going to make it through another 8 months of snow.
To begin with it needs new tires. The old ones are bald.
Replacement cost $1500.
A new engine, or at the very least, a complete engine rebuild.
This one burns oil, and antifreeze.
(OK, it doesn't burn the antifreeze, but it runs it through the cylinder and pumps it out the exhaust).
According to the code that I get from the CDI, the engine is suffering from a "multiple cylinder misfire".
Repair cost from $2500 to $4000.
The seals on the transmission, and transfer case are leaking. And one of these items has recently started to make a bit of a grinding noise
Repair costs from $1000 to $3000.
The catalytic converters are really plugging off, and need to replaced
Replacement cost $1500.
And it needs a new tail-light, because I backed into a F*cking tree last week, and broke it.
Replacement cost $63.
So, it's going to cost around 10 grand to make my truck safe and reliable.
And even if I do spend the money to fix it, it'll still be a 9 year old truck with 250,000 miles on it.
I was telling a friend of mine about my sad situation and he said, No Problem.
He'd seen this type of thing before, and figured he could "fix all of it" for about $200 and a bit of his time.
I took the truck out to his shop last weekend, and today I stopped by to see how he was making out.
He said it was going great, but it would be another day or two, before it was finished.
On the bright side of things, the new engine in the track bike has been running awesome for the last 582 km (362 miles).
And it's going to be hot and sunny all next week.

$200... + $10k LOL I saw ads for trucks like this for something crazy like $22k new in the US, I assume not so in Canada?

Yes after talking to some friends who live abroad I don't bitch about taxes in the USA so much anymore.

Yeah I get that. We are getting the new Mustang here in Aus... We will end up paying more than double the US price for it when it gets here :/ Id love a F150 or Ram for <$30k, its a vast amount of vehicle. But if we could, I doubt we could afford to run em, fuel is double the cost... but... the UK and EU fuel is double what ours is, so like you we dont moan as much as we used to...

It must be easier to replace the engine once you take the whole truck apart. I bet you can afford the engine once he sells all those parts he removed.

Rory's new bike and my old bike, adding some class to the bike shop.
PS: My rebuilt engine now has 986 km (613 miles) on it, and it's still purring like a cat in a creamery.

I hear that the 5th Engine Rebuild is the lucky one, so I've got $10 that says the engine's going to run fine, for at least 2000 km.
This bike had 32,948.8 km on it when it seized for the 3rd time.
Rebuilt the top end and put 932.8 km and it seized for the 4th time.

Two engine rebuilds in 1325.6 km.
Today, the odometer read 35,610.1 km, which means that I have put 1325.7 km on the engine since the last rebuild.
The 5th engine rebuild has now lasted 0.1 km longer than the previous 2 rebuilds combined.
It's mid Fall in Canada. Daylight hours are getting shorter. Temperatures are getting cooler.
Overnight lows are around 2*C. Daily high temps are around 14 or 15 *C.
Today, it was sunny and 23*C, so I left work a couple of hours early, and went for a ride.

with daily high temperatures around 3 to 5*C (38 to 41*F), and dropping to below freezing at night.
Today, the weather was awesome.
It was partly sunny and by 2 PM the temp had climbed to a balmy 10*C (50*F).
Since this might be the last nice day of the year, I told my wife that my chores would have to wait,
because I had really, really important things that I just had to do, today.
I'll do chores tomorrow, when the high temperature is expected to be 2*C (36*F).
Took the long way to the shop.
Bike ran awesome in the cool crisp air.
I had fun.
Damn, I love this bike. Runs freaking awesome, and it's FUN.
When I finally did shut it down, the odometer read 35,804.0 Km.
Which means that I've put 1519.6 Km (944 miles) on the engine since the last rebuild.
Took one last picture before pushing it inside.
Don't think I'll get to ride this bike again until next year.
Really gonna miss it.

A few days ago, I posted an update on my track bike, unfortunately, I posted it in my purple project thread.
So, I've deleted it from there and re posted it here.
Last week, in my purple project thread I said this:
It had an injection oil leak on one of the carbs.
From what I've read it's caused bu crud in the check valve in the oil pump.
So, I drained the tranny fluid and coolant. Disconnected all the hoses and cables.
Pulled the clutch cover, pulled the oil pump, removed the nozzle, spring and ball bearing,
and cleaned it all out.
Since I had the clutch cover off, I decided to install a new set of EBC clutch fibers.
After evaluating the EBC clutch springs, I decided to stick with the Barnett springs that were already in the clutch.
Put the engine back together and then pulled the wheels, so I can get new tires installed.
Today, I got the new sneakers for the bike. I decided to stick with the BT45's
A 90/90 for the front, and a 120/80 on the FZ600 rear wheel (Stock Sizes).
After I got the tires installed, ...... I disconnected all the hoses and cables, and pulled the clutch cover....Again.
Fortunately, I hadn't put in coolant and tranny fluid, so nothing leaked and caused a mess.
Last night, while I was cleaning up my tools, I suddenly remembered that I forgot to set the clutch adjuster,
and in addition, I forgot to tighten the locknut on the adjuster.
I set the clutch, tightened it all up and put everything back together....Again.
For now, I've run the oil lines into clear bottles, so I can see if the leak has stopped.
If it has, then I'll fill the tranny and the rad, and put the seat and sidepanels back on.

Last Summer when I cleaned my carbs, I used a set of No-Name float bowl gaskets. And they didn't seal. Gas dribbled out all Summer.
Tonight, I installed a new set of OEM Yamaha float bowl gaskets.
I guess we'll see how it goes next year.
The bikes all back together, and ready to be parked for the Winter.
Next Spring, all I have to do is plug the oil lines into the carbs, add some fresh gas, and ride it.
