Re: Modifed RZ - '83 with RGV, Brembo, Zeel & other parts

I recently got back another set of bright and green zinc plating. In this lot was the last pieces I needed for the monoshock linkage for this bike and also parts for the one from the F2. Ive said it before and Im sure I’ll say it again, but I really hate restoring these systems, there are so many parts and invariably all the DPOs ignored their maintenance. This means a lot of parts to find, many are NLA now, and almost all of them are expensive. Anyway, its been a hard slog, but I can now see the light at the end of this nightmare of a tunnel...

I added the newly zinc’d H-arm, caps, bolts, washers and nuts to the parts I had been sourcing for months. I may have mentioned that I picked up the seals locally, outside of Yam it seems you can only get the 4mm version of the 5mm wide seal that fits the ends of the larger collar of the H-arm, but that will work, nothing rests against the seal of course. With the shock seals cleaned along with a couple of good-but-grubby cap seals and then a few more bought (the larger cap seal is now $25+ if you can find one!) and a new larger collar (a bargain at $5ish) from Yamaha and a good used small collar (Thanks Steve!) that assembly only needs the phosphor bronze bushes I bought online to have 0.5mm removed from the OD and Ive a full compliment of new or restored H-arm parts.

Moving onto the Swinger, I pulled the seals out of the caps and cleaned them up and re zinc’d the caps. They came up perfect. Beware when doing this that the rubbers do wear, but if youve a few sets you will probably be able to get a good set out of them. New dogbone seals I bought locally and rezinc’d the washers and nuts. The dogbones themselves are a project for LB and I to work on, we have many sets. We are planning to cut them back to good metal on a lathe and then make up phosphor bronze bushes to fit. We did think about using needle rollers, but with an unhardened dogbone shaft its a worry. We will probably zinc the dogbones green when done, its a good coating for this kind of part.

So for now, just some lathe work and I'll be able to tick this horrible linkage off my list....

Ever Onwards... Built this caliper up finally now my plating is back. Body blasted with glass beads (protecting the surfaces you dont want blasted with tape), seal lands wire wheeled out, scraped with pick, wheeled again and then finally the body halves were dipped in Alubrite (fully removes alloy corrosion), then painted with VHT caliper paint. New pistons, seals and dust boots fitted and reassembled with cleaned up rubber joint seals and replated bolts. All other parts were cleaned up and refitted, including the rattle plate, shims and cover, then plated banjo bolt with new copper seals and replated bleed nipple... and then rest... :)

Ive a new set of stainless pins for this one from a mate in the UK when I pick them up :) And with new set of pads it'll be all set...

Very nice detail work on those calipers.

That kind of work gets me motivated. Thanks, much.

Bought some mirrors for this one, plus the very NLA rear brake reservoir hose I was missing.

Image

The mirrors are the chrome version very like the LC, and fitted to other models but look right on LCs and LC2s. The quality difference between these and the aftermarket LC mirrors I have is ridiculous, these are much beefier and better made. Made by Toyo of course, no Yam logos on them now but gen yam of course. About twice the price of aftermarkets, bargain.

Yesterday the LC2 dash repair panel landed from Martin in the UK who 3D prints these.

So, this is what i started with, the PO had cut the remains of the old ignition surround off after a crash.

Image

I had to clean the raised back a bit to get a closer fit.

This is what it looks like fitted. I used Wurth Replast to get a good solid bond and once pulled in place with the supplied screws I used the excess as filler where there were any gaps.

Image

The finished article. Waaaaay better than not having an ignition surround and is 25 quid well spent I reckon. if youve an LC2 dashboard, get one. The latest version like mine also includes a cut out for the clutch cable to give the surround a better chance of surviving a crash as its the cable that takes these out, the dashboard plastic being no competition to the much more solid cable.

The flash makes it look grey and less like the OEM plastic, IRL its fine and black. A bit of plastic polish would make it look more shiny of course. This was literally how I left it after building up back into a dashboard.

Of course, once fitted to a bike you'd never look twice at this part so it will blend in fine. The fact its there allows that mental tick in the box that the bike has the surround in place, they look like theyre missing something when its gone imho.

Thanks for getting one Jon and making such a great job of attaching it to the original clocks. Good luck with the remaining build and if you can think of anything else I can help you with please let me know.
