Aaron's +7mm athena 443cc

#1 Post by aaronmvrider » Fri Feb 24, 2012 11:07 am

time has come for my spare parts bike to be built... i have that much stuff lying around... and its never going to be sold as its handy to have so i am building this project using my spare etc...CHEAP...

i have enough brakes and electrical parts for 3 bikes 2 standard cranks still in good order from running bikes, 2 gearboxes a set of 31k carbs enough reeds for 4 bikes 2 wiring harnesses..... 2 spare seats a full fairing kit..... you get the message...

so i was talking of a big block build but ..... silly money was being talked about just for the engine... riding my 4mm stroker is fun enough and can loose my license any day of the week...
perhaps i am maturing...

i am going to build it on a budget reusing my bits.... but very tidy as you would expect

so far i have cleaned just about everything SPOTLESS.... or pulled it apart for cleaning or powder coating..

rebuilt the gearbox... had a noisy 4th gear so picked the best bits to assemble 1 complete box with TSS bearings kit

Image

the plan so far .... full fairing kit that came with the bike... have some low bore 31k barrels being ported and bored with Roger right now... soon i hope... running 31k carbs using air box and original head and electrics... all original wheels, forks and rear shock ?? (tbc)... i have 1 that felt pretty good when sitting on it... wasnt too saggy.. sticking with red white blue colour and going to do the same year model decals so i have 2 the same... unsure how i will tie in the graphics on full fairing yet

a set of pipes is a definite.... and a set of shift forks... the set i have are blue and well worn... and a set of front springs..

need a few things like gaskets and seals, cables and a set of handle bars.... going with the standard style for bars...

so consider it started.... exciting times ahead for me.... i love the building stage.... ps dont expect it to be built this month

:smt003 :smt003.... lets see how far i go off the build plan.... first step is convincing myself i dont need another 4mm stroker crank.... anyone want 2 good cranks .... they may be for sale...

i plan on learning how to polish stuff .... i hear its addictive...

Flush w/ fresh brake cleaner. <---should be all you need...i wouldn't put anything else in the lines that might leave an unwanted residue that could affect performance.

Coool! Im thinking i will do much the same with my 83 build... I have so many parts i have an almost whole bike... all i need is a rear wheel i think LOL

brake lines... use brake fluid... anything else is dangerous...

cables... use a cable oiler and WD40.

oh, and as its fully faired, why not do the 85 graphics? the 3 bikes in a line will look amazing with slightly different graphics. Mark @ RDdecals will sort you out for graphics, he did me.

get a cable lubricator (if you dont already have one) and I would flush w/ break clean and then lube w/ penetrating fluid.
they look like this:

Looking forward to watching this unfold.

The timing is interesting as I was just thinking today that I have a spare 88 frame and everything I need to build a complete bike. Might just build one to sell or just to see how fast and cheap it can be done. We all know how that usually ends.

Flushing the brake lines with clean brake fluid is the only way to go. Just make sure you know what the preious fluid was. If it was DOT 5 and you flush with 3 or 4 it will cause problems. Just my opinion here, but I think you're better off with new lines. A small price to pay to stay safe.

As always, if you need anything I'd be happy to help if I can.

cheers fellas...

the dowel locators are around $4 from Roger... will give you all a shout for sure... i do need a few things ... will message you all if needed... or email ... taking it to the next level..:smt003 :smt003

anyone got a handle bar they arent using... or recommend a nice aftermarket one... using the 83-84 fittings etc...

brake lines... i am going to put a nut on the banjo bolt with 2 copper washers and give a good clean... then flush with fresh fluid once the master cylinders are rebuilt and ready to fit... remember this is budget..... lets try and stay on track... the lines are in good condition.. i am rebuilding the calipers and master cylinders etc...

i am hoping for 6-8 months to complete.... ??? ready for next summer...

@ Jon got a link to the 85 decal kit...

may tidy all of my spares up and see what i may sell to fund this project also...

crank.... coil.... cdi... power valve servo and motor..... crank..... unmolested airbox.... clutch components..... petrol tank.... body work pieces..... couple of head lights..... petrol caps..... TSS reed blocks and reeds .... rear shocks and stuff in general... etc....

might get a few bucks ... we will see....

Talk to jord-rz in the for sale section. He has a set of forks there. They have the wrong inners right now, but he says he does have the correct ones. Maybe he'll sell them separately. Can't hurt to ask. He lives near slinger. http://www.rzrd500.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=7764

LB, er... still in two minds for the wheels on the 83 bike... I also have RGV forks... I could either fit those or just go standard and build a 31k... Let me know what you want for the wheel, I might go for it... just dont know yet... the 83 is a build for 2015 really.... Ive a lot to do before then...
