My completed 85 RZ hybrid project

#1 Post by RZed » Thu Mar 07, 2013 12:23 am

Hello all,
I just finished up my project recently, and thought I'd share the results. I think it turned out pretty good for my first build.
It took about 3 months to do the build. Lots of trial and error finding a rear shock that works with that particular swingarm.
And some of the brackets and bushings I had to make. The bike rides real nice. In the future, I will re-valve the rear shock and put on a steering damper.

The parts list includes:

99 R1 complete front end
Tarrozi Hi-rise clipons
TrailTech Endurance II Speedo/Odometer
VJ23 swingarm
CBR F4i rear shock/custom dogbones
SV 650 rear wheel
SV 650 rear brake caliper
JL GP stainless pipes

RZed,

VJ22 shock works with the VJ23 swingarm, when you use the adapter brackets that bolt to the lower center stand bracket. Using the VJ23 brake calipher and bracket would allow you to get
rid of having to use the brake stay arm. Bike looks nice.

3 Months, Bugger me.
Nice work, looks like she can be a daily rider too.
Not too much bling to worry about riding it everyday/where, you obviously don't mind it getting wet.
I like it a lot. Well done.

Interesting and pretty.

I have tried to instal an SV650 rear wheel into an LC frame and it is too wide to fit without modifying the frame and fitting an offset sprocket. Seeing as the LC and RZ motors are essentially the same bottom end I am wondering how you got everything to fit?

Very nice bike! A nice palette of Classic Yamaha colours!
It also makes sense the RGV swingarm and GP pipes combo.
Three months in your first build leading to those results is quite an achievement in my opinion.

Thanks for the great comments and all the advice I got from you guys on this forum!! :smt023

Steve,
I tried to find some RGV parts without much luck, so I went with what I could find. And the stock shock was way too soft with the different linkage on the VJ23 arm.

I have tried to instal an SV650 rear wheel into an LC frame and it is too wide to fit without modifying the frame and fitting an offset sprocket. Seeing as the LC and RZ motors are essentially the same bottom end I am wondering how you got everything to fit?

Hooligan,
The swingarm bushings had to be narrowed .060" per side and bored out to fit the RZ pivot bolt. Then it slipped right in place. The SV rim worked using a GS 500 sprocket cush drive with a 10mm front offset sprocket.

Really nice bike :smt007 love it.

You gave me a nice idea on thoseTarrozi Hi-rise clipons , I will give them a try as these should be much more comfortable when riding compared to my RGV clip ons on my 421.

Enjoy that bike.

Nice bike, you made quick work of her! :smt023 Those are some OLD Toomey stickers on the tank.. I haven't seen those for years! I like the pipes, I also have a set.. the welding on those things are just beautiful to look at, those guys are metal artisans.

Regarding your r wheel, it seems that GS500 cush sprocket has a lot of uses,I have a FZ600 swingarm/ 1987/88 GSXR 4.5 rear wheel combo that utilizes that same GS500 cush setup. I didn't end up using it, but its all packed up in a box for the last 10 years...lol

Again nice bike enjoy...the ride :smt002

Yes to what everyone else said :smt023 :smt023 :smt023

Do have pics of "adapting" the stock upper fairing bracket to your setup?

It sure looks great :smt007

Yes, I was running a set of the original Toomeys on my bike prior to this. Hence the "old" stickers!!
The SV 650 cush drive was about a 1/2" wider than the GS drive and wouldn't properly align with the front sprocket. Now the chain just clears the tire. (150/17)

Yes to what everyone else said

Thanks, I will try to take a few pics of the bracket and post them for you.
