Re: Yamaha SZR 660 conversion to 350 YPVS - ( TZ250 replica
Hi Guys,
Bravo, Kenny! I´m glad more people are starting to mod SZR´s, like you and Vin! I´m also very happy to serve as an inspiration for the pals in need of it!
Bngt,
I sourced all the fiberglass panels from "sdcperformance - BBplastics" in UK. Yamaha 4DP4 1994 or TZ250G model.
They are just fine quality because the surface finish will need to be prepared a lot prior to painting due to some bumps and joints. They are classic fiberglass (non woven). I recommend the other type of fiberglass that is made of cloth (woven) fiberglass because they are thinner yet very strong. They might be more expensive, too. The whole kit price costed me as follows:
Front fairing £140
Seat unit £70
Screen £49
Shipping £80
Total £339

How is it going for you, any progress? Do you have any pictures of your friends bike?

Re: Yamaha SZR 660 conversion to 350 YPVS - ( TZ250 replica )
Hi there,
After five years I´m continuing my project with the most challenging part, which is the engine mountings fabrication.
I´ve recovered the templates I made out of paper and that´s been the base to fabricate the front mounts with some 5 mm. aluminum plates.
Long time ago I made the rear mount, as you can see in previous posts.
I am approaching the mounts fabrication in a different way, so I can continue without having to weld. I eventually might take the bike to a welder although it will be really not neccesary but for nice pro finishing purposes.
So, instead of welding I´ve cut the frame and will put inside the hollow "Deltabox" frame a solid block made of several alu plates (always 5 mm. thick) with two protuding plates in order to hold a single mount on each side of the frame/engine.
(Tinypic sucks because it has rotated some of the images...)

Re: Yamaha SZR 660 conversion to 350 YPVS - ( TZ250 replica )
I still have the opportunity to adjust the engine´s tilt to perfection, swinging from the rear mount.
I have a question, please...r
Is the cases´ gasket line intended to be level? I mean just horizontal?
Edit. The answer is... not really, and after a brief pic research, what seems to determine the engine´s level is the horizontality of the YAMAHA logo on the clutch side.
That means I´ll have to shorten the final plate because the engine is still not fully level on my bike.
(I´m lucky this overall solution I came up with allows for non-trauma final adjustments)

Once engine tilt has been corrected...
First is to figure out where to cut.
Final location
All plates have been cut with a jigsaw, perfectioned with a manual milling machine and finished wit a belt sander.

Re: Yamaha SZR 660 conversion to 350 YPVS - ( TZ250 replica )
Maybe you already considered it, but the shape of your mounts at the bottom appears to prevent the engine from dropping out the bottom for removal. I realise that the side plates can be unbolted at the top, but if you do weld them later this might pose a challenge.
Re: Yamaha SZR 660 conversion to 350 YPVS - ( TZ250 replica )
Thank you Ruzty for your feedback. But...
I intend to weld only the chunk that goes into the hollow frame.
The final plate will be detachable (it slides between two plates, and I still have to drill some holes and put some screws&bolts) to avoid that problem you mentioned.

Re: Yamaha SZR 660 conversion to 350 YPVS - ( TZ250 replica )
Wow, great work. One thing you might want to look at is some kind of strengthening across the mount plate to stop the engine twisting the alloy plates, there is quite a lot of force there, remember the early LC broke exhausts through that twist and we got the under engine tie bars to stop that.

Re: Yamaha SZR 660 conversion to 350 YPVS - ( TZ250 replica )
Thanks a lot, Jon !
I’m conscious about that and intend to use the tie bars since there’s a strong place to attach them to the frame.
I was about to use 8 mm. plates instead of 5 mm. but I found 5 mm. to be rigid enough if using the lower tie bars.
The pipes will be held in some firm yet elastic way, too, as they have to vibrate/shake in a solidary way with the engine.

Left side mount is ready
Although I´m going to substitute those screws for some nice button head ones...
And now let´s start with the right side of the bike!

Re: Yamaha SZR 660 conversion to 350 YPVS - ( TZ250 replica )
Thanks for the input!
Both cylinders are right between the plates, so I can’t put any strengthening across them... but the mountings, although they’re 5mm. thick, are short and rigid enough to withstand the side forces. I’ll fabricate some thick separators between them and the elastic bushings + OEM damper washers; everything combined with the additional torque bars underneath, so all together will do the job I guess. I’m already working on the right side mount, pics soon...

Re: Yamaha SZR 660 conversion to 350 YPVS - ( TZ250 replica )
Right side mount is ready.
Bolts&nuts&washers are temporary until I find some more beautiful and integrated ones, I mean more flush with the overall appearance.
I´ve ordered some 35 mm. thick separators to match the engine bushings with the alloy plates; I will also use some OEM washers matching the engine casing where the rubber bushings go. Willing also to find a nice long bolt instead of the threaded rod you can see in the pic. I´m sorry the pics turned out rotated but the picture upload server did so.
