Yes, it is an interesting event for sure.

Thanks for the compliments.

A little factoid for you...

The guy I rode up with (Simon) was on his Suzuki ??? commuter bike. He told me that bike has 115 thousand miles on it. He said it is his #2 commuter bike now.

His new #1 commuter bike is

XSR900

He says he loves it.

There were 2 sheriffs hanging out there. I did not see citations being handed out like I have read about. I parked a bit out of the way while they were there.

Great pics as always Ken!! I like how you used the smoke from the fires as cover to ride the RZ. :smt003 Also, how close did the fires get to your area? [smilie=eek.gif]

And what had you heard about the cops doing up there? Looking for issues with bikes?

Charlie
There was a thread or two on the BARF forum this year that the cops were walking thru the parking lot handing out citations for modified exhaust and other stuff. I have kept away from Alices this year for this reason not wanting to risk anything with grey and/or modified bikes.

The fires are about 200 miles or so from here. Absolute horrifying devastating situation for so many up there. Hopefully no one on here has been impacted. The air quality here has been bad enough to close schools and we were sent home from work Wednesday afternoon and then Thursday morning (Friday too for those that worked that day). In the Mines Road pics above the first one shows about what it's been like most days since the "Camp Fire" began. The sun is quite filtered and visibility is really bad. It's hard to believe that it could be so smoky 200 miles away. Today brought welcome rain and more is coming so they say. Altho now mudslides and concern that burned remains of people will be washed away to be never accounted for. Last I heard was 83 confirmed dead and the missing count ranges from 500 to over 1000. Really, really sad.

Glad the site is back up!!!

RE: "cops were walking thru the parking lot handing out citations for modified exhaust and other stuff"

I've heard there are new laws that went into effect a year or so ago for older non-USA market bikes that make allowances for emissions and titles. It might be worth finding the statute and keeping it in your wallet.

I thought the new laws were to clarify the import laws. 25 year old vehicles can be imported into the US without penalty. Don't know how California feels about that as CARB is probably working on pollution controls for wildfires.

If the law, as it is written, only applies to importation and does not circumvent any inspection requirements, then I guess it doesn't help. However, if the law is intended to facilitate your ability to register for ON ROAD USE, a vehicle greater than 25 years old and originally sold in another market, then you may be excluded from some or most inspection requirements. As always, a careful reading and knowledge of the laws that impact you as a motorcyclist is a must.

Inspection requirements are usually "Rules." Laws always trump Rules. So if the LAW says your 1980 Canadian import is excluded from emission requirements, then the emission requirement for inspection would be waived.
For instance; a dirt bike in NH can be converted for street with the addition of a working brake light, single beam headlight, a mirror, and a horn. This was a LAW written around 1983. The intent was to allow Enduro event participants to get from trail to trail via short distances on roads.
An officer once wrote up one of my customers for failing to have turn signals, and for using non-DOT knobby tires. The same officer wanted to write-up the dealership for issuing the inspection decal. We argued successfully that the LAW overrides the state inspection requirements and the case was dismissed.

So if, by LAW, his bike is excluded from emissions requirements due to it's age and origin.....
