Prototypes

#1 Post by Zombie » Tue Nov 15, 2016 6:40 pm

How many of you were excited to learn about the development of a bike, only to find out that the manufacturer gave up on it and pulled the plug?

The Yamaha YZM500 would have been an absolute game changer in the dirtbike world. An aluminum framed, water cooled & power valved Open class bike in 1987 and '88 would have reignited the 500 class instead if letting it stagnate to death. Only 8 made.

At least 1 is in the Yamaha museum, Jeff Metasavitch was racing one for a bit, and I'm assuming Jay Leno has one.

I would have bought one of these if it didn't get scrapped.
Reverse cylinder, direct injection.

It's a 300cc derived from their trials engine I believe.
Inovative shock linkage and Ohlins suspension.
I don't know what ever happened to it but a dealer where i live said it got canned. Shame really cause it had some interesting ideas in it's design.
