What's a decent bike torque wrench?

#1 Post by LC Cnd » Sat Oct 14, 2017 3:03 pm

Been borrowing my buddy's (pictured) wrench for a bit and feel its time to purchase my own since he won't sell his - though he has several and I offered cash for it. Ck'd on line and noted several requiring batteries and those that don't. Like the exactness of a LED readout but not battery replacement. Guess I like hearing the click of a torque wrench. What the best torqueing tool for the RZ/RD tightening ranges for $150-200 new?

Precision is a solid pro grade tool.

I have a Gedore which is a reasonably priced quality German brand.
Current model is something like this: https://www.contorion.de/handwerkzeug/g ... m-21046663" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hazet would be the more expensive variant, but they're still in your price range:

I use Snap-on digitals, but they're $400-$600 a pop. I have 2 different sizes. As a mechanic, I can justify these. Love the lights and vibration. They also give you ft/lbs, in/lbs and Nw/m. No brainer for the pros. I know it does not help you, but if you need three in one, consider them. I have both 1/4" and 3/8" drives.

I use Snap-on clicker and dial depending an what I'm doing. Prefer dial for fasteners that need to be tightened in stages. I have wrenches in 1/4-3/8-1/2 inch from 0-50 in-lbs to 200-600 ft-lbs.

Precision (linked above) used to be Snap-On's maker but no longer. Good quality tools at reasonable cost.

Note, from the shop manual, torque specs range from 0.7ftlbs (1Nm) reed valve to 78ftlbs (107Nm) rear wheel axle nut. Located a Tekton 1/2 inch click drive ranging from 10-150fllbs for $50 CND. Don't know much about the brand yet but looking into it. A shorter handled one would be ideal.

In the US a wrench that calibrated and traceable to the Bureau of Standards is the only wrench I'd trust. I'm sure you've a similar standard. Be sure it's a good wrench.

Your right about the standards - good wrenches are hard to discern with all the knock off/jobber cheapo's available on the net. Not interested in used unless I know the owner who was careful to spin his/her wrench back to zero to prevent spring stretch. It appears I'm going to have to purchase two to include all the torque ranges the manual presents. Gunna have to bump up the purchase power to get it right it appears.

Precision makes clickers that don't need to be returned to lower scale and are more robust than spring type clickers. Click on the link I provided earlier it goes right to the split beam type. Prices are good too. If you cannot get them shipped to Vancouver I will facilitate purchase and shipping for you.

Appreciate the offer. Looking at the D1F15CHN (3-15lbs) currently for comparison & cost.

I just saw a write up about these in a mag. It mentioned that Lowes has one that tested real good. It was a clicker style and held its torque readings very accurately. It isn't very much compared to snap on or mac. I will be getting one to replace my current cheapo wrench. They had the 3/8th and 1/2 drive size and the price was easy on wallet enough to buy both. Something to look at and not sure you have that up there but you are close to Bellingham WA so maybe a cross border trip for you or mail order? It was their house brand which might be Kobalt.
