radiator cover

#1 Post by Juicebox » Thu Jun 12, 2014 7:35 pm

Does anyone know if the radiator cover is also made of ABS plastic? One of the lobes on the bottom of the cover that the chin fairing screws into has split, thus allowing the nut inside to pop out. The chin fairing then pops out on that side with the nut/bolt attached, and the chin fairing wobbles around. I don't need any undo pressure on my chin fairing....there are already enough cracks in it now. Does anyone know of a way to fix this? I was thinking I could "weld " it back together if it was ABS. Thanks.

I don't think it is ABS, I tried to modify the rear plate holder which looks to be the same material as the Rad guard. After 2 days in acetone, the parts were still the same as when I put them in!
Mine is the same, I used some professional body repair epoxy to glue the split back together and also hold a replacement nut back in place. I originally used a fender washer on the back of the split tab where the nut came out and that also worked but didn't look too tidy if you were laying on the ground looking at the underside of the rad cover... I know, I think I have OCD!!

It's Polyethylene or Polypropylene , thermoplastic can be repaired with fusion weld .

Check this simple guide , everything is there , best info on the planet .

its not abs . abs can be an ass to weld . its easy to warp . because you have to get heaps of heat into it to get the rod to stick and get a strong join

it will most likley be pp ( Polypropylene)
at work we get a multi purpose rod that does all the pp and pp mixes ,
if it were my bike this is how i would fix it the pics of the tail . http://www.gixxer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=166646" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

dont think i would have done the holes and cable ties . but that 3m 8115 is real good shit . much better than any jb weld or plastic repair glues . i use this stuff all the time its great , the strongest stuff out hands down
