Are these actually Japanese made, or are they just Indian made tanks being sold in Japan?

Smoker is right, but its worth noting that the Japanese would not entertain the quality of the Indian tanks for more than a millisecond so that concept would not fly in Japan. Like most of us now the Japanese are all about restoring our bikes so looking for as close to OEM as possible.

Remember most (let's just say "all") of the Indian tanks are made from photos so have no way of ever fitting or looking right. Avoid them like the plague. I put up some pics on Norbos forum of a local guys Indian tank, it was a joke. not only was the shape awful, but the outlet for the fuel was over the frame and in the wrong place on the tank... the list of issues was long.

FWIW The Taiwanese LC tanks are great, they are very close to OEM.

Im excited to get one of these RZ tanks when the are released, should save a few of my builds. 86'on next... please!

I’ve been trying to contact them since this thread first started. They got back to me early on but after they announced they had finalized the tanks and we’re going into production... nothing... crickets... Facebook messenger, direct email... even a phone call... nothing :(

wolfeman, I’m still interested in purchasing a carbon fibre tank if you’re going to be producing them. If you get a response from
Retro, let me know that as well... thx.
wolfeman28 wrote: Thu Aug 22, 2019 5:43 pm Definitely not what they quoted me in May of this year. If they make one that is $423 I'll grab 2 of them for sure.

Edit- Sent them an email instead of going through facebook, I'm going to try and get an updated price and timeframe for when these will be done, as it seems they are behind on manufacturing based on what I can translate.

So, no carbon fiber tanks?
Still making the CF tanks, but for a resto bike I'd rather have a steel tank as close to oem as possible.

So here's what I've been able to find out with a bit detective work and bad google translating.

I got a response from these guys back in May when asking about the tanks. My next 4 emails have gone by with no response. I tried in English as well as translated to Japanese. After some digging around, it seems that they have gone silent since they missed the original timeframe for shipping out the tanks. My buddy who understands the language better than I do seems to think that this was similar to what we see here in the States as a Kickstarter campaign. They took preorders for tanks at ~$400 before the tooling was made. Once they had enough to continue, they made the tooling and started prototyping the tanks. As it goes with most projects of the crowdfunding type, there were setbacks and the shipping deadline came and went. Nobody has received a tank yet that preordered, but the site says they are making progress. This brings me back to the response I got from them a while back- the tanks will not be $400 after that initial preorder run, they 'could be anything up to $1200'.

So I'd wait til they get the kinks in production worked out, let the preorder folks get the product to check out, then see what they end up charging for the production models.

Good Day RZ Owners
I just went on Retro Website again and snooped around http://retro-spl.jp/publics/index/44/ they say the tank is finished, if so they don't seem to be in any hurry to sell them because I can't see anyway to buy one! If these tanks ever make it to the market I'll take 2 or maybe I'll just hop on a plane to Japan and buy 100 of them. I don't do Facebook so didn't get a chance to look there but I did go on Google Earth to try and find the Retro's building but I can't figure Japans addresses. My Son in law works for Cummins (Diesel) International and they do business in Japan so I've asked him to look into it for me, but please if any of you guys got any ideas "Check it out" and get back with anything you find, it could help! I don't think I need to tell any of you what a big deal this could be for the RZ community, hopefully we are not just chasing more ghosts.

That sounds about right for a one-off aluminum tank by these 5 guys:

"In the Suzuka 8-hour endurance race, one of the FIM world endurance championships in 2015, we obtained enough reliance that about 80% of more than 70 participating teams used our aluminum tanks. The technology impresses even the motorcycle persons concerned overseas, so recently, the number of the orders from the race teams of Europe, where endurance races are prosperous, or the street riders seeking quality excellent pieces has been increasing.

We usually provide over 50 kinds of tanks, which becomes near double if one-off products are included. Since all our products are handmade, exactly the same thing is not at all. It becomes the tank only for you in the world."

It's kinda like, how bad do you want a nice, safe fuel tank between your legs and sitting on your very special motorcycle, over 3k in my engine so 2k on a nice new fuel tank ain't that big a deal. I don't think any of us plan on getting rich from building our bikes. So, am going to get an Aluminum Tank, Maybe! But I want to see how the new Steel Tank thing plays out first. I've given all the information for Retro to both my Son in Law and Nephew their companies do business in Japan so we'll see what they can do, unless you guys want to pitch in on a plane ticket for me! I'll get some answers and maybe even a crate full of fuel tanks!🏁

I remember fifteen or so years ago when the NOS tanks were on eBay for $800-$1000 and I couldn’t believe they were selling for so much. I should have taken out a loan! Hindsight runs in my family...

As JonW mentioned above, the Taiwanese made LC tanks are very good copies. I purchased one from Yambits a few months back and am very pleased with the quality.

They are available from many sources, including Webike (JP), Yambits (UK), Norbo (UK), etc. for around $400.

https://japan.webike.net/ps/#!search&p. ... 0&p.c=1127

Perhaps the best plan of attack would be to lean on one (or all) of the distributors to contact the Taiwanese panel beaters and get them on the job.

Surely the market is there.

That's a good idea, it sure as heck won't hurt to try it and how great would that if it worked! If we all just sit back on our hands we ain't gonna get shit! Go for it, I'm going to!
