1986 Rectifier/Regulator

#1 Post by Smoker » Sun Oct 06, 2019 7:59 pm

Can anyone confirm that this is the correct R/R for the 1986 RD350?

Part # 47X-81960-A0

Thanks! :smt006

Your part number and link are different parts. The part number is right, but it shows a reg-rec (item #1) for an early (1st Gen) RZ350.

1986 and up RZ350 uses the same regulator rectifier as the RZ500 and TZR250. It was also used on many other Yamahas of that era.

Do you need one Pete?

Yeah, fiche diagram has the wrong R/R.

I think I figured out what happened. Friendly Yamaha couldn't get Part # 47X-81960-A0.

I thought it was N/A, and is superceded by Part # 47X-81960-A3-00.

So, I have Part #47X-81960-A3-00. Will it work?

They're all the same. I've seen many over the years and regardless of the part #, the stamping on the item is the same.

You have to be careful with them. They do fail and when they do you can run into problems elsewhere. Make sure it has a perfect ground and make sure you get around 14V at 5000 RPM. Failure could give you much less or much more.

Hope it works!

This R/R is about 1/6 the size of the '84-'85 R/R.

I realize why you are looking at small size but you have to remember that part of the job of the R/R is to dissipate heat from the unused stator output.
Red/White US '84, Spec II pipes, Y-boot w/K&N, Fox Shock, Mikuni carbs?

Well, small size is just a bonus.

I'm using the 1986 style stator/rotor, so wanted a 1986 R/R to go with it.

This tiny R/R, with no cooling fins, is the OEM Yamaha part on the '86 RZ.

But, I think 47X-81960-A1-00 is the OEM replacement part that supercedes 47X-81960-A0.

Not sure exactly how I ended up with 47X-81960-A3-00, instead of 47X-81960-A1-00. Not sure what the difference is. I remember seeing an explanation of the part number coding, so maybe I can find that for more info.

My 500 has that rectifier. I had a strange charging problem when I first started the bike up. Running a separate ground wire from the base of that rectifier to the chassis corrected the problem.

So, what John said, make sure you have a good ground.
