Tachometer fluctuating

I have noticed this issue on my bike where the tach will dance around a little bit when maintaining a constant engine speed. While accelerating or decelerating, it's smooth and consistent. Once I reach a constant speed, after a few seconds it will start to dance within about a 1000RPM range (+/- 500).

Since this is totally a mechanical system I am wondering what could cause this. Maybe something sticking in the bushing/bearing... or not enough damping to smooth out the movement of it?

It an error code. The later FZRs did this with an electronic system. It isn't as commonly know the first diagnosis system Yamaha employed was mechanical. At a particular moment it will point towards Bethlehem. Then Montreal. Who knew?

You should be because that makes no sense at all

It is not uncommon for them to require a drop of lubrication from time to time. You're lucky that you can easily open the cover and access the tachometer gearing. Put a few drops of light oil, even silicone lube, on the gearing. You can also do this by just removing the cable and shooting some spray inside, but that can be problematic if you're not careful. However you decide to do it, it isn't complicated and should solve your problem if the cable is not the cause. You will, or course, have already lubricated the cable by now.

Yeah the cable is brand new and I have lubricated it. I will try lubing the dial itself.

Ahh yes attempt at humour.

Should be able to test tachometer with battery drill. Strategically applied grease may help damp the mechanism perhaps.

I didn't have fluctuation, but mine was making a whining sound at times. Two drops of oil, one from the bottom side and the other from the top side, into the bushing at the cable entry cleared it up for me. Maybe it will stop the fluctuation too. Repair M32 in my thread discusses it in more detail.

It's good that you caught it early. Mine started making the LOUD whine noise while on the way to the dealer for state inspection. The needle suddenly went right past redline and all the way to the zero-rpm bottoming pin. Then the needle came off! I had the tech disconnect the cable at the engine, rode home, disassembled and pieced it back together.
