Nuts to you

#1 Post by LC Cnd » Tue Feb 09, 2021 9:56 pm

Does it matter if the stock Elsie 13mm exhaust nuts can be replaced with 10mm with the same shoulder width? Just wondering if the torque specs for the 13mm can still apply to the 10's without rounding them off. Can't find a local supplier for 13mm or 12's - lots of 10's available.

Are you talking about the nuts to hold the exhaust collar on?
They are M8 nuts. Just search for M8x1.25 pitch. They are very common.
The 13mm is the hex size. Chinese and US made nuts are typically 13mm A/F (across flats) Japanese made parts are 12mm. This was because the Japanese use true metric bar whereas the US and China use 1/2" so 13mm became the accepted head size.

Nuts and bolts are measured by the thread diameter and pitch, so the exhaust nuts are 8mm, not 12mm. 12mm is the wrench size you need.
So, to order, you need M8x1.25 flanged nuts. They are available smooth and serrated. OEM is smooth but serrated is fine. (This is the finish on the bottom edge that meets the flange.)

There are over a dozen different flavors of M8 x 1.25 flange nuts to choose from here

I have ordered a bag of them some time ago.

Thx for the info kpke. The JIS High-Strength Steel Flange Nuts got my interest. For Canadians who might be interested, purchased SAE metric nut removal kit from Cnd Tire yesterday on sale ($33). Think its a better solution than a nut splitter and did the trick 1st instance.
