oil pump flow rate

#1 Post by speedfrk » Thu Mar 18, 2021 4:41 pm

So, the 85 RZ is back together after 1st over pistons and all new seals/gaskets. Running on premix now. I've bled the pump so that oil flows out of the bleed screw freely but the oil flow from the small tubes going to the carbs seems too little. Idling, it will drip, drip, drip but does it need vacuum from the carbs to also draw the oil through the lines? What should I be looking for? The cable is adjusted per the manual...

I would check the actual pump plunger. It’s in the manual. Feeler gauge on the pump stroke. They don’t actually flow much oil.

The spec. is for 200 strokes;
0.5~0.6cc at minimum stroke,
5.1~5.7cc at maximum stroke.

Seems like the line to the right carb is pumping and the line to the lt carb is not, or not much. Do you just hold the pump open with the cable to measure max stroke?

Set your pump lines in the correct spot, make sure the cable is all lined up, get the pump stroke out, keep turning over the engine till the plunger is all the way out, then measure gap from the pulley to the plunger washer, remove the nut and fit whatever shims needed to make the correct gap, Shims are easy made if you dont have any, I get the correct sice washers and just sand them down on some 220 paper, figures of 8 till you get the correct shim size.
Im just using this vid as a reference, You see the way the pump is pumping, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aaNKoTnZVY

I checked the pump stroke- it was perfect, already. Then did the bleeding procedure in the manual with the rpm's at 2000-3000 and the cable pulled all the way out and got a steady stream of oil. So, I think all is good. Engine runs great and jetting seems good with stock airbox and the Basanni pipes. First one I've ever ridden that had the stock airbox in it.

That bike looks and sounds real good. Nice work.

Is that original paint on the fuel tank?

Yes, original paint. It has a slight crease on one side but the guy who bought it decided to leave it original since "they are only original once". It's a nice survivor and can always be painted in the future.
