R1 Blue Dot Brake Upgrade Recommendations
Re: R1 Blue Dot Brake Upgrade Recommendations
Hi everyone, I am restoring a 4l0 europe model, three stripes, and I will have to change many parts. In my country, Italy, the RD 350 is also famous for a bike that doesn't brake, it has a not-so-happy nickname ..., so I'd like to improve braking. On the RD 350 2UA I solved it by fitting the brake calipers of the Tmax 500 model 2005/7, without having to use plates, while on the 4l0 I would not know what to do or put on. The calipers of the 4l0 look the same as those of the Xj 550/750, do you know if they can be mounted leaving the bike with an almost original aesthetic? The other solution is the one described here in the forum, put the pliers of the R1 but you need the plate of the TDR; where can i find it? I did not know of its existence.
For the brake pump, on the 350 2UA, I put a Brembo PS 16 and I must say that it works very well.

The TDR Website is: http://www.bansheesuperstore.com/
NK Racing out of the UK also makes them: http://www.nkracing.co.uk/n3.html
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your information, I saw that various brake calipers of other motorcycles can be mounted on the LC 4l0; it would have been useful to know if there were any brake calipers to fit without putting plates. But by strengthening the braking system in this way, don't the forks go into crisis?
Re: R1 Blue Dot Brake Upgrade Recommendations
No, modern brakes do not overwhelm the LC forks.
If you do not want to use conversion plates, one solution is to go with early 31K fork uppers and 1UA fork bottoms. The mounting holes for the late forks are wide enough to accept modern 4-piston calipers. However you need the early inner fork tubes as they are shorter for use with a triple clamp mounted handlebar. Obviously this will require a set of triple clamps from a 31K.
Something like a modern FZ08 master cylinder works well as it maintains the original look and has a mirror mount.

Re: R1 Blue Dot Brake Upgrade Recommendations
I wouldn't mind putting on the R1's braking system, maybe that's the easiest solution. I would not like to change the forks, I would like to keep the bike, if possible, original.
Re: R1 Blue Dot Brake Upgrade Recommendations
Then you are going to need a set of conversion plates. Even then I would suggest the FZ08 master cylinder as it is a better match to the Blue Spot calipers.
FWIW, this is exactly the brake system I have on my LC. I went to a set of early 31K forks and triples but they look identical to the LC front end. Only thing needed was to space out the fender and front axle to keep everything straight.

Re: R1 Blue Dot Brake Upgrade Recommendations
The restoration of the bike will finish by putting the original system (the bike must have it registered in the historical register and therefore must be all original) then I will certainly change the brake calipers so I can brake in complete tranquility.
