Case halves are line bored, meaning they are machined as a set to ensure the crank journals are perfectly aligned. That's why upper and lower cases both have the same identification markings to ensure they are always matched upon assembly. If you change only one half you run the risk of your crank not being properly aligned and the issues that will cause.
