Overheating issues

#1 Post by savethe2strokes » Fri Mar 24, 2023 1:14 pm

Last year on a ride after passing a car on the highway my temps started to rise higher than ever before. Typically, even on hot days on the highway it would be below 190 degrees. On this ride the temps went over 200 closer to 210. I noticed when I slowed down and got off the highway the temps started to spike. I have done some basic things like change thermostat, radiator cap and change the coolant to a 50/50 mix.

The exhaust doesn't smell like burning coolant or have that white smoke of coolant. Coolant tank is right where it should be. I did notice with reving the bike temps will start to come down, but as soon as it's idling they go right back up.
Could this be headgasket, water pump impeller or something else?

Video of the temps rising while idling.

The fact that idling makes the temps go up tells me it might be the water pump. Everything else sounded normal up until that point. Normal operating temperature for coolant is 200 degrees or so.

I assume to get to the water pump I need to take off the side cover and drain transmission fluid and coolant?

You can view the impeller by taking off the flat steel plate to drain the coolant, but to do anything with the pump...yeah, you're draining transmission oil and removing the clutch cover.

To look at the impeller you will only need to drain the coolant and undo some screws, but yes to do work on that part you will need to remove the clutch cover as Wade says.

Have you leak down tested the engine.

I went through this a couple years ago. Tried everything. My engine is fully ported etc. turns out the head was machined for race gas. Reprofiled the head and 1mm clearance and haven’t had a prob since.
