Front Subframe Spacing collar 9038706249

#1 Post by evan_calgary » Mon Jan 29, 2024 2:54 pm

Sorry for multiple posts in here with the many questions! With bike coming in boxes its hard to know exactly what's missing/how things fit.

Looking at parts fiche below at part #22 which is a collar behind the bottom of the front subframe.

https://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-rz350-1984 ... /D-11.html

Anyone know how long this collar fitting is? This spaces the front subframe out and bolts into the top bolt hope of the lower triple too, correct?

I've got a small box of spacers but not sure which one it may be!

If you google the part number, you'll find some photos which might help you gauge the length with reference to the hole down the centre being sized to fit a M8 bolt.

Also, the bolt that goes through it has a part number ending in 35, which indicates that it is a 35mm long bolt. If you assume that it screws in as far as the other (lower) bolt that doesn't go through a spacer, that might also give you a clue to the spacer length.

Let us know what you find. My (UK) bike has never had those spacers fitted and this is the first time I've seen that diagram.

Thanks for the note. I hadn't even considered them until looking at the parts fiche and I honestly don't think i've seen them before. The front subframe will be spaced out too far from the upper triple to fit the cluster bolts so I will likely omit them unless anyone thinks otherwise?

I agree that based on the part number, the bolt is probably 35mm.

I would also guess that the collar is 24.9mm, based on the part number.

I think omit is the answer. I've never seen that part. The cage bolts directly to the lower triple clamp without a spacer. The only thing I can think of is it is used on your "special" one year only 85 Canadian.

The Canadian 1985 F1 uses the same headlight and stay assembly as the 86-90 F2. The 1985 N1 and 1986 N2 do not use that spacer, even though they use the round headlight and similar stay to the early bikes. The spacer appears to be used only on the early RZ350...1983-1984 in Canada and 1984 and 85 in the US.

I think the spacer in question is there to do what spacers do, provide clearance, in this case between the stay and the upper triple clamp. If you have clearance without it, then you can chose to use it or not. If you don't have clearance, you may have no option other than using it.

If you do need to provide clearance there, I would think any spacer would work as you can easily modify the length as required. If you're doing an anorak concourse restoration you'll want to be exact in your parts selection; otherwise, a trip to any hardware store should provide an option for such spacers.

Thanks all. This is the first bikini fairing bike i've done despite doing quite a number of the 85-91 bikes. The bolt holes line up to the upper triple without any spacer so I shall proceed without. I honestly had not even considered having one there until I started looking at the parts fiche. This bike came in boxes and it has been some time since i've built an RZ!
