Great looking bike Jon. I agree with Petros, that is one of the nicest LC's I've seen. Nice work. You have to be proud! :smt003

Thanks for the kind words, its appreciated. Building any bike is hard work and rewarding, but specials seem to make you work for it, but they are also more rewarding i reckon, which is probably why the 85 is still in pieces... LOL...

So... who wants a good news story about how fitting a new shift shaft and then carefully fitting a new seal using cling film over the shaft splines and lots of grease will fix the problem if a leaky shift shaft? yeah, me too... sigh, fekin thing is still dripping on me garage floor, and if anything its worse than it was before... :smt017 :smt013

Hmm... i was met with this under the bike when i went in the garage this morning....

Image

Hmmm... not fixed then....

If I had heeded the words of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, as spoken by Sherlock Holmes, 'How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?', then perhaps I would have found this earlier...

As no doubt all of us would have done, I immediately suspected the shift shaft... we know they wear and old ones always have a grove, or rust, or both... and new seals like working with either...

But... there was a lot of oil on the mat this morning, did seem a lot for a shift shaft leak... and yes, it wasnt the shaft... a mini strip down of the stator side cover and...

well, see if you can see what's wrong with this picture?

You have something missing. Wonder where that went?

This is what it should look like.

LOL Aaron, thats after e stripping it down... LOL...

Ok, John has spotted it... Yes that's right, this engine was missing one of the small alloy 'core plugs' at the end of the shifter fork shafts! How the hell do you lose one of those?!!?!

Image

I had never noticed it was missing and to be honest I didn't even know they were removable... Luckily I had another engine I could rob one out of for now.

As they are not designed to come out they are not on the parts list... and of course I now need one for the other engine, so if anyone is stripping and binning a set of dead cases, can they remove one for me? They just tap out from the other side with a drift, they are only held in with friction... Ta.

Here it is fitted...

Image

So lets see what tomorrow will bring for the oil catcher... (Im hopeful this time!)
