That's interesting because the shift forks are different. The RZ uses dowel pins in the shift fork and the banshee is one cast piece. As for the shift drums, the RZ has a neutral switch nub thats the only difference I know.

Here's some more info in general.

1983 TZ250:
Fork, shift 1 3AK-18511-00
Fork, shift 2 5F7-18512-00
There is a method to the alphabet soup madness. And, for $37, you could compare the banshee part to the RZ part in person.

The PN's I listed

FORK SHIFT 1 2GU-18511-00-00
FORK SHIFT 2 2GU-18512-00-00

came from partzilla and are the same for RZ and Banshee.

I just double checked. Oh, looks like Wades prefixes were for TZ 250.

Comparing the parts fiches side by side they look quite a bit different.

I'll just wait until I pull it apart and see what's bad. Was hoping to preemptively purchase all these parts but looks like maybe not a great idea.

kobra, what reference are you using when you said this...

"That's interesting because the shift forks are different. The RZ uses dowel pins in the shift fork and the banshee is one cast piece."

Maybe this which shows on the banshee fiche and not on the RZ fiche

PIN, STRAIGHT
90250-08017-00 3 required

Doesn't make sense that the shift forks are the same PN looking at them both on those fiches.

I'm basing that off of some posts on bansheehq forum as well as photos. Banshee guys like upgrading to RZ shift forks because they shift more smoothly apparently. And yeah, the photos in the fiche look different.
Maybe... they are interchangeable and Yamaha changed the design without changing part number. Kinda like a new revision that is backwards compatible to save money.

I agree on tearing it down first to see how it is, then go from there.

That looks like it came from the bottom of a landfill site.

I was just pointing out that the 5-digit segment of a Yamaha part number indicates what the part is, so most shift forks will be 18511, 18512, 18513. The 2-digit suffixes indicate revisions, supercessions and variations such as piston diameters.

Just get it apart and get after it.

As others have said, once you open it up the problem will likely be quite apparent.

After that, it's a as simple as sourcing and replacing the worn/damaged parts. Easier than you may think with ebay at your fingertips.

I just went thru a "popping out of gear" condition on my ex KH400. The worn dogs and forks were quite apparent, and once i sourced low-mile replacement parts (thankfully locally from a friend) and mix and matched the best of the best and CAREFULLY SHIMMED each shaft it all ran beautifully.

Since 1987 or over 200.000 km I never repaired a transmission.
Bottom ends are cheap as chips.
Get one, dump your crank + reworked clutch into it and enjoy riding.

Maybe change the double roller bearing behind the clutch (recently had 2 engines where this was worn and yielded to weird clutch behavior).

Hey kpke,

If you still need a set of forks, I have a good used set if you are stuck. You can have them for free, just pay the $12 shipping from Canada.

Cheers

the one-piece banshee forks are the same as RZs they simplified manufacturing process. The gear ratios wont suit a road going bike tho. BTW check the sprocket/shaft splines before splitting the cases.

Thanks for the info motoholic. I always appreciate your knowledge on here. Good to hear on the shift forks.

I have an engine rebuild thread just started here

I'll check the sprocket shaft closely today.

My RZ350 did the same thing only one time and it felt like the clutch hanging-up to me. My basket was notched so I dressed it and installed new friction plates, Roger at Wicked did a complete rebuild and inspection and said it looked OK but have not had a chance to ride it yet, Your basket looks to be notched much more than mine was.
