New owner, new member.
Hello, awesome forum you have.
I just picked up a low km 1981 RD350LC. Im told its been parked in a carport since 1986 so it does have a fair bit of rust on bits. Im assuming the tank will have some pinholes and the engine is locked up from sitting.
Here is a pic

Re: New owner, new member.
I'll make this my project thread.
There are some beautiful 350's on this board. I don't think mine will get to the level that some are. Though I would love to restore this one to showroom condition, I also wish to ride it come spring. My goal is to replace all seals and whatever is necessary mechanically. Cosmetically, ill just pick some of the low hanging fruit as they say.
The engine is locked solid, I sprayed the cylinders down with penetrating oil but the pistons still won't budge. I also filled the crankcase and cylinders with diesel fuel and letting them soak... The front calipers are also stuck, I'll be replacing them with some "silver dots".
I believe the seller when he said it was parked since 1986. The bike is still wearing the factory tires and hardly worn (don't worry, Ill be putting new ones on). The odometer is just over 4000 kms. The bore is is original. Footrest rubbers look perfect,,, everything is perfect except corroded. The only scratch I could find is on the front fender, possibly damaged from a tarp covering.
Anyways, everyone likes pictures so here are a bunch of befores:

Re: New owner, new member.
Congrats on the new bike!
I see it even has the reflector on the rear fender. It's great to find a complete bike like yours as many of the parts can be refurbished and reused if you're not planning to bring it back to showroom condition.
I have an LC as my "daily driver" which is not pretty but is completely functional. It's more fun to ride than my other bikes so I don't want to take it off the road and lose a season (or 3!) of riding while restoring. So I just do small improvements on the rainy weekends!
It definitely makes sense to pull-apart and inspect the bottom end on a bike that has been sitting for a while. I'm in the middle of doing this on an RZ motor that had been sitting for about 15 years - and while the cranks seals didn't look/feel too bad - the main bearings and big end bearings had corroded badly.
Good luck with your bike - I hope you have a workshop with a heater!
