SV650's

Post by rzrej »

Hi, haven't been around much lately but had some drag racing thoughts so have to talk to Steve...........I live about 3 hours away from him.
Had a first gen SV about a dozen years ago, it left but I really like it. So I picked up an 03 basically stock and then did the GSXR front and rear mods.
Oooohweee, it's an all new bike. Has a willing motor, an excellent frame, just all the other bits are budget.

I also put on a high bar kit and the Buell footpeg mod (lowers it 1.25" or so) which makes it really comfortable. Did a trip out to Vancouver Island and back with a friend who built a similar bike. The SV is a bit like a RZ 4 stroke thing, embarrasses some bigger bike, great fun for the dollar and they too punch above their weight. And exhaust and a bit of tuning yields big results. 72-78hp at the wheel or so. I am currently waiting on a full M4 exhaust for it.

Then this black one fell into my lap for next to nothing, it has all the mods except the 180 rear rim/tire. Bit of aesthetic damage but meh. Was pondering selling one of the bikes then thought of Steve and his drag racing exploits came to mind....... Should take the black bike down the track a few times........they are fairly easy to launch and put up with abuse like a rented car and come out smiling. Anyway cheers, hope all are doing well!

Stock pic of bike then after, got caught in the rain on that trip to the Island in September. Wasn't entirely warm!

Surprising what a difference those GSXR conversions can do to a bike.
It's no wonder the factory doesn't put those parts on that line of bikes to take buyers away from the GSXR's.

The silver one looks so much more complete with the upper fairing.

Good luck @ the drags.

Brilliant engine. My 650 VStrom has the same engine and they go forever. Shim under bucket valves, but rarely do they need adjusting. Many have gone well past 100,000 km and the valves remained in spec. Reliable, fuel efficient and fun. Hard to beat that combination.

Absolutely, I sold a 2012 Vstrom last spring, had 80k on it. Ran like new, great bike.

My daughter rides a stock SV, so when switching back and forth it sure is noticeable. Stock bike feels quite lousy all of a sudden.

She liked the high bar thing so put them on hers too.........just to make sure we contribute some 2 stroke stuff lol, pic of her on a 90 RZ I had. I told her she rode it too slow, had to get the tach over on the right once in a while!

I also got a 650 Vstrom. What a phenomenal bike. I once held it wide open through the desert (never let off for 2 hours), averaged 25mpg and about 115 indicated. That's on a motor with 80k miles on it. Didn't even hesitate and runs great still. Burns a butt load of oil though!!!

The SV motor has a bit more pep due to shorter intakes, cams, and other slight tweaks.

''2 hours wide open in the desert'' lol, were you just trying to blow it up or just didn't GAF? They do take a lot of abuse.
The SV has, I dunno, 75 lbs less to drag around? Definitely feels peppier because of that, has a 11k redline instead of 10k.

Reminds me of a business trip coming back from Munich to Northern Germany.
Almost no traffic on unlimited German motorways plus a company car with paid fuel - what's not to be liked about that?
It turned out one of the fastest trips ever and the last 2h I had the Tiguan 2l TDI at WOT (which is the 200-220kmh region).
Oil temperature was around 125 deg C then.
My colleagues wonderd how got the 12l/100km fuel consumption...
Bye

That's hilarious, and awesome. 125C, sounds awfully warm, all systems were maxed!
My daughter had a 03 Jetti TDI. I was amazed how hard that car pulled (stock), fun experience, great engine.
But I never pinned it for 2 hours...............not that we could do that anywhere here anyway.

12L per 100 is great all things considered.
