Jetting 101

#1 Post by 85RZwade » Fri Jun 04, 2021 5:22 pm

Did this yesterday to nail down a half-throttle hesitation:

Image

I learned two things: it’s actually a quarter-throttle hesitation, and I ride like my grandma.
Unbelievable how little throttle I actually use. Most of the time, it’s just above idle and rarely did I ever see more than half throttle. The marks are a tuning revelation, but they’re maybe a bit more reality than I was prepared for!

You have to ride it like a 2 stroke. That means plenty of throttle most of the time. I'm not saying you need to run in the red zone all the time, but there should be no reason to be much under 6000 RPM unless you are planning to stop or slow down for traffic. Ride it like a 2 stroke and see if your throttle issues are real. Riding around at 1/4 throttle and using only the pilot circuit will just frustrate you.

The image below will show you how throttle position corresponds to the various carburetor circuits. Once you understand the correlation it will be easier for you to diagnose any part of the range that you are not happy with.

Boyesen has a chart that shows this same information in a different form. I've tried to insert it here, but for some reason I'm having no luck, but it can be viewed here:

The chart shows how the different elements you listed above overlap. I have an ancient paperback book on carburetor tuning that I still consider the Bible of Carbs.

Yes, when I felt the hesitation (which is relatively new) I was thinking about worn needles as a possible cause, but I probably just need to make sure the pilots are clear and make an airscrew adjustment.
I was surprised to be rolling along at 5500 and the throttle just cracked open, maybe 1/8 throttle. All these years my wrist has been sending bad intel to my brain.

My wrist has been guilty, too. Heading into a WFO corner and my brain telling my wrist to hold it open. The wrist answers back, "No, no, if I do we'll all die!"
