Thanks Questo Vecchio rz, The only remaining concern was that I had read about the front motor mounts cracking and I can’t find the thread on it again (I have been reading up so much on these builds)! Penske just phoned today and my shock is on its way back, Eric and Dustin at Penske are top notch shock guys, they even revalved and dyno’d the shock for my application I don’t think you can get that type of value for your money at a suspension shop ($180). I am eagerly waiting on the tail piece so I can get the mounts fabbed and get everything off to Powdercoat. I’m also having some issues shortening the steering stem; if I use a spacer below the lower bearing I will miss the mark on my new steering stop (more welding) and I don’t want any spacers at the top as I’d like to keep the top clamp as tight to the steering head as possible but, the top bearing surface on the stem necks down pretty quick, that and I had a hard time finding m30x1 and m28x1 dies (they should be here soon after the holiday weekend).

You've made great progress. It's looking fantastic.

Prior to powder coat on my thrasher bike rebuild I had to have this crack welded up on my frame.

Thanks Ken that’s what I was looking for, I’m not sure how to strengthen the motor mount area but I will, my frame has no cracks but obviously these areas are suspect

The project is waiting for parts; I wish I was more organized and had collected all the parts before hand but that didn’t happen. I did make a cardboard template for my electrical boxes and will will fab that up tomorrow; should the boxes switch sides? the coils go right where the Zeeltronics wires come out; could there be electronic cross talk? I will have to weld 2 more tabs to the frame to hold the ally plate in place at the back end. I’ve got the triple clamps close but I can lower the top triple another 10mm (when I get my m30x1 and m28x1 dies from China) then I can weld on the steering damper post.

I am starting to see a motorcycle appear with my feeble mock-up attempts and it’s giving me a little more motivation to get to the actual build phase. My SmartCarbs should be here soon so I am going to jump ahead to the motor, Iantomasi wants me to map the transfer and exhaust timing before I send it to them for the stroker porting and head mods. I may also have to make up some custom cables and brake lines to ensure everything fits nice but that’s pretty far down the pipe, if I can just get this stuff to Powdercoat I’ll be real happy!

I decided to go with carbon fibre, I’m going to trim the top a little more to make it look a little more balanced and round the corners but I think it looks better than aluminum. 8 wires will go forward, 2 go to the m-unit and 2 will go back down to the pickup so my main harness will go up the middle of the 2 units and the high amperage leads will go off the back of the m-unit to the battery.

Great solution; carbon fiber adds lightness, even if you can't see it.

Well, I received my Airtech solo seat today and it was a total letdown it doesn’t even come close to fitting, it’s about 2” short of the tank/seat juncture and about 2” too wide at the back of the tank, I’m devastated! I waited so long and now this

That's because that tail section was designed for the F1 bikes, 83-85 with the different tanks. I thought that Rory, a forum member and Canadian distributor for Airtech had got that sorted a few years ago, maybe try to get in touch with him to see how he made out or contact Airtech directly to see if they have the tail section available for the F2 bikes.

I talked to Max at Airtech and he said that I “should have known that” I did ask why they don’t put in some sort of disclaimer and he replied that he gets this all the time with Canadians! So I can either send it back and just run the stock seat (it’s the only model they make) or try and cut it up to make it fit

It’s been really slow going, my Penske shock is at the post office and I’ll get it tomorrow, I’ve shortened the steering stem so I can weld up the damper post and some mounts for my new wrong solo seat from Airtech

Because I like to do things the hard way I am going to forego sending this seat back and cut it up to fit so, more slow going but the good news is that I will keep busy with my new favorite project an 82lc!

What Penske shop did you send your shock to? I need the same thing done to mine, and that price is very attractive. Thanks, Bruce.

Penske racing shocks Reading, Pennsylvania. Talk to Travis or Eric you’ll get a complete refurbished shock with a dyno sheet

Looking forward to seeing the custom work on the seat/tail section.

Besides fitting properly, a shorter overall length will look better.

Good luck! :smt023
