PVL coils

#1 Post by Yamavarna » Sun Sep 05, 2021 2:02 pm

Has anyone heard of these and know if they provide an improvement?

If you have a Motoplat ignition that has a faulty HT coil, then it'll be an improvement.

Just check out the description and decide on your own if that'd work with a standard RD ignition

I currently have some of those on a RZ, and have used them previously on TZs.
They make sparks. PVL made ignition parts for a long time.

Improvement over what? There's nothing wrong with the stock coils.

A coil has to generate enough voltage to jump the electrode gap, any more than what is necessary is wasted. So an 80,000 V coil is no better than a 30,000 V coil if it sparks the electrode at 20,000 V. In some applications, like racing an old motorcycle the old coil may not be able to charge the secondary windings fast enough. A newer coil can do this when running at high rpms for long periods of time.

Apparently these coils have built in cdi’s and used to be some sort of hot setup on rz cup bikes, I can’t use them with my Zeeltronics but I may be able to use them on my lc if I can figure out how, maybe bitzz can chime in on how to set them up (right off the trigger maybe) but then there would be no advance curve… ya I would definitely need someone smarter than me to figure it out

Yes, those are the ones with a CDI
I use them with a PVL ignition... I have no idea what they'll do connected to a Yamaha stator
Setup was nothing special
Have you seen this?
