wheel swap?

#1 Post by rippa » Sat Oct 14, 2023 10:26 am

Have any of you swapped RD 400 mag wheels onto a RZ350? I'm building a GP replica and it seems like a no brainer swap to get the Morris 7 spoke look on the cheap, Also it looks straight forward to add a second disk onto the front wheel. This is my first bike build so any info is new info to me. I'm open to any suggestions or warnings of pitfalls in the process. Thank you in advance.

The RD wheels need tube type tires and are not particularly light.

Thank you for the response. I wasn't that concerned with the weight but needing tubes is a deal breaker.

Why is that ? As tubes are easy and cheap to buy

Have you checked any of the wheel and spacer dims and the relevant offsets? axle width? speedo setup? Tubes vs tubeless are typically the least of your worries with a wheel swap. If that's a dealbreaker as an added complication I would highly recommend sticking to wheels known to fit on an RZ. I have a problem with tubes, flat tires. 3 on my RD400, 0 on my RZ.

The deal breaker is all of the cons! I had no idea how heavy the RD mags are or that they needed tubes and I'm sure that already limited tire selection just gets more limited, Add the things I knew I was going to have to do on top of that and the cons outweighed the one pro which is the looks.

All of the vintage mags are super heavy. The LC and RZ OEM wheels are anchors. RD400 may be heavier thought not sure. You start to run into width and speedo issues depending on what you're doing and you ruin the biggest benefit of the older bikes which is the easy maneuverability as soon as you add wider, modern suspension parts which overpower the existing frames. Tubes are an extra pound or so and not much of a pain to deal with if that's the look you want. The airtech bodywork is likely the most GP you will find out there. Look up my Marlboro replica bike which is posted on here somewhere if you want some ideas for a GP replica. Its about as close to the YZR500 you'll find before spending some serious money. It was a fun bike but lots of comprimize to get clip ons that would fit the fairing and did ruin the streetability of it even though it was closer to a track bike it modelled. It was loud, stiff, aggressive and cool. Previous track bike with track bits.

I know Marvic makes a Morris 7-spoke wheel for older classic bikes. Never checked about RZ/RD fitment.

I doubt the 2100 pound cost would fit the 'on the cheap' portion of his inquiry though. Nice wheels.

Yeah. First place I saw was asking $1,335.usd.

But they're new, tubeless, and magnesium. :smt045
