For most folks the stock tire sizes work ,as good as any. if you "really want" a different"wider" look and are not into the absolute best handling, then I think you could go with a 120 or a 130 rear tire. My old bikes I had 120/130 rear tires..I dont remember offhand which model or even the brand,I actually ran a 130 racing slick, even on the street :smt009 ...Lol..To be honest I didnt ever notice a handling problem with the larger rear, the main issue I had was always the damnned front tire. I do remember the Metzler tires that were avail always gave me troubles as far as the front tire was concerned. It was the old school Dunlops that usually worked out for me. Stay safe with the stock F tire width. You can also do a search what modern bias ply tires are avail in differnet profiles that may be recommended..but the BT45s seem to be the stalwart champion of many if not most classic bikes running bias ply tires. you really wouldnt go wrong with them.
As far as everything else goes..Id for sure buy some aftermarket expansion chambers..you will pick up 13 h.p. on average from stock to aftermarket on a U.S,spec machine. THATS ALOT!! plus your LOSING ABOUT 20 LBS!!!
you have alot of options these days as far as exhaust,Toomey right now after 20 plus years is offering a 'COMPLETE"package for the RZ,which includes the pipes, carb rejet kit"perfect jet kit",and battery replacement tray and xtras..IMO its by far the best thing you can do,and his price is silly cheap!. Honestly if you have the budget,,but his kit! He is in the vendor section here. Ive had alot of pipes and his have pretty much ..the best for your average hotroded RZ. You could also go with DGs which are cheaper and then re jet yourself,or even utilize the Toomey jet kit. Ive used the Toomey pipoes and jet kit on two bikes..and it works! Its everything they claim,& not anything less.
Your STOCK CARBs are 100% capable of giving you every thing you need for a steetbike, you dont need to buy new carbs, the Toomey rejet kit will satisfy your needs,I'm fairly positive. if you have to have new carbs...I would stick with 29mm flatslides to no larger than 30 mm, IMO there is no real advantage to these over stock rejeted carbs on a street bike. But if you must just like a wider rear tire..you can use realisticlly both without any severe penalties if that is the look you want. Lets face it ..Its your bike and your probably not a 50 year old "squid" street racer..you just want a fun toy, thats your own, your not out racing the canyons like a mindless youthful dork.
If you want to go the real street racer thing, thats fine. I'd then use the stock tire recomendations, progessive f fork set up or equiv,a rear shock.."NOT A SWAP" but a shock desined for the RZ and a complete pipe carb rejet combo. with just this basic setup..you would be amazed at what its capable of..if your silly enough to ride the streets lto its full potential.
Hagon sells a fairly reasonable replacement R shock for the RZ, then there are a few others such a Penske at the higher end and it costs anywhere from $700.00-1100.00 depending on what version you aquire,. RZs Unlimited ,usually carries FOX RACING SHOCKS which are refurbished, with adj ride height.
IMO here is the basic things youll want to have a kick ass RZ! :smt002
1.)Make sure the basics...the YPVS system and engine are were they need to be
2.) Pipes and rejet kit..I'll flat out recommend Toomey
3.) Shaved cylinder head..make sure its not already done:smt002..NICE IMPROVEMENT!
4.) TDR brand reeds or equivilent if you prefer
5.) Have your suspension..as good as you can afford. ITS JOB ONE! This incudes F & R shocks, tire choice, and new f/r bearings..use tapered for the front..all these are easily avail from RZ specialists.
6.) Id utilize a stereing stabilizer..I alwayas had wobble issues without one..but only at stupid speeds.

Vendors you can count on are in no particular ordrer, there are quite a fw but these are the usual go to guys in the states...
1.)SPEC2. Gary Shumake, has by far built more RZs than all others combined 40+ years in the2 stroke Biz. different guy to some, but solid performance work and products.
2.) RZs Unlimited. Cary is the owner, full service, restorations and custom.
3.) HVC Cycle..HUGE inventory of repo NOS and performance parts.
4.) Economy Cycle, again.. parts John I think he offers forum discounts.
5.) Toomey Racing, Former "works factory "G.P tuners and killer perf parts.
6.) WickedMotorsports, Roger makes pipes and really billet trick perf parts.
7.) Scott Cough Racing,@SCR racing top quality engine builder, stock to race. multiple "championship" winning engines and title.

Excellent recommendations one and all!!

I'm generally a very impatient guy, so taking my time and working on the safety stuff that cuts in to my riding time is killling me. How ever, here are some picks of a major project (about 3 hours tota):

I've been meaning to stop in here and give an update on my 84 egg beater.

Been running since I brought it home but not great...I got all the safety issues straightened up , I own three tanks now and parts coming in from all over the world. Thinking other than some paint I might be nearing the end...then I got to be thinking about a top end..but I've got a dial indicator and all the tools to measure crank play...and my pal Steve raises a good point that if I do this now, I'll never doubt the history of whats in the cases. :-)

I've got some pics to post later today...

Ive got a list of stuff Ive done/gotten and Ill post that. Ive got a budget, I just didnt stick to it. :-)

I've run in to a bit of an issue on my RZ project (and I'm SO close to being done). So when I got the bike, the tank was bashed in on both sides. After I bought a new triple tree, I realize it's not the stops on the tree. It's the little tongue that sticks out of the front of the frame (bottom), and it's friend at the top of the crown. Both were sheered right off from bad tank slapper.

I figure I can have the two stops fabricated and welded on....or buy a frame as a doner...or find d someone that has these pieces and get a local welder to help me out.

Suggestions? Anyone have these frame mounted stops in a drawer? Thanks all!

Wow, back to this thread after 11 years or so. Cool. I fabbed a new steering stop out of 1/8" (maybe 3/16" it's been a while) steel and had my friend weld it on. He's a pro. You must be careful to not overheat the steering stem so as to deform it for the bearing race. Not sure what you mean by it's friend at the top??? There's only one steering stop on the frame isn't there?

HI Ken, Yeah, I had a couple challenges after falling off a ladder and the RZ got stuffed in a corner. I found a new tank which is now perfect. If I want to keep it that way, steering stops need to be sorted. Thanks for your tip on fabricating and welding. For reference, here is where I think I need fixed up.

I also finally found critical parts for my Kidney Bean, which is now full functional. I find that I'm missing some tiny screws and bumpers/buffers to KEEP it functional. Little self-tapping screws, etc.
