Exhaust question please
Hi guys
Can anyone help please RZV500R
Does anyone know if the heat shealds on the upper exhausts are suppsed to have a layer insulation between the exhaust and the sheald.
I cant find any information in parts lists mine has what i could only describe as loft type insulation inbetween the exhast and the heat sheald ????
Appreciate any feedback on this matter
Regards Neil

Re: Exhaust question please
No insulation between hear shield and exhaust ![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/gear_wink2.gif)
Just welded together at the inlet and held in place by 2 hose clamps

Re: Exhaust question please
Sorry, i have seen you are asking about the RZV - i don`t know it there.
But I`m quite sure it`s the same as the RD500.
There should be an insulation mat on:
- black triangle in battery area
- inside rear fairing
- rear mudguard (small piece of insulation mat)
- belly pan
- battery box
I think 1GE only:
- under the driver seat
- under the tank (heat shield with insulation mat)

Re: Exhaust question please
Hi Guys ive inspected the heat shealds today and they are in pretty poor condition they are rusted through in places!!!
Does anyone know if there is a part number for them or are they part of the exhausts?
Also has any one run a bike without them or maybe used exhaust heat wrap to sheald the heat i do intend trying to find some to replace mine but thinking this may be a solution so i can use the bike

Re: Exhaust question please
Hi Neil,
they are listed as one part in the parts manual, so you can`t order them.
Mine are not rusted thru but have also holes from rubbing against the exhaust.
I want to rechrome them as they are and weld them back onto the exhaust pipes.
Don`t know how important they are. I have seen a lot of aftermarket pipes wrapped in insulation material.
As Yamaha made some changes over the years regarding heat shields i guess they had trouble with the heat in the area of the fuel tank and seat.

Re: Exhaust question please
Cheers for the reply Speed Freak
I'm thinking wrapping them with exhaust insulation tape could be a better solution to the standard shield as it will help carry the heat with the exhaust gasses rather than it escaping under the seat ?

Have you considered ceramic coating ? - you could keep a reasonably standard appearance and have good rust proofing as well ?

Re: Exhaust question please
There is a product from Moose Racing " Adhesive Back Heat Shield " Ceramic material that works great on the rear panels and belly pan. I've used this stuff for many years on the RZ'ds, etc and have had no issues with it. It sold in 18"x !8" sheets, it does a great job and looks very professional when installed.

Re: Exhaust question please
Keep in mind when using heat insulation tape or coatings the exhaust gases will stay much warmer and due to the quicker exhaust gases the exhaust will to be 'shorter' and therefor be working on a higher rpm.
Re: Exhaust question please
I have thought about this however i was only looking to wrap the frontpipies of the 4 cylinders not as a performance aid but just to keep the heat away in this area so i could use the bike untill i sort some sheilds out
