Service M55 - Polish Silencer Cans...
Sometimes I think I subconsciously just enjoy taking this bike apart. I had this all apart when I was repacking the silencers and giving the can exteriors a little bit of a shine back then would have added an hour to that job. But no, I put the new packing in and together it goes for a test ride. AND THEN, I decide the cans need a polish. Oh well, I do enjoy working on this bike.
I’m getting down to the little stuff on this bike and the silencers were looking pretty dingy compared to everything else and something had to be done.
This is what I started with. The bottom cans weren’t bad except maybe for some black overspray on them from a previous owner’s sloppy paint process. But the top cans needed much more attention.

At first, I tried some Simichrome polish , which works wonderfully if you want a mirror-like finish… which I don’t. So I toned it down a bit using some of that foam backed fine-grit sanding pad. It came out to my liking and here are the results. I should have done that years ago!! I also gave the seat pan a once over, just because it was begging for it.

Re: Operation: MOSQUITO CONTROL BIKE - Florida RZ500 Project (52X)
Thanks Ken. Well, according to my task list, very little is left to do! LOL
It has reached the level that I envisioned back in 2012 when I bought it. I tidied up everything I wanted to (and then some!!) and got everything working on it properly. It starts and runs great now and puts huge smiles on my face when I take her for a ride. I’m not sure what’s next, but it seems timing for a sale might be pretty good.

I was going to mention in my previous post something to the effect of
Are you one of those people that when you get done with it you sell it?
The problem with selling it is you may never buy another one again at the ridiculous prices they are going for.
If it puts smiles on your face when you ride it, why not keep it?
It's a very nice bike.

What kpke said - I am looking forward to the day when I can ride it, polish it etc rather than redoing what I keep thinking was done.

Actually I’m normally one to hang on to stuff forever. I still have my first car (42 years and counting!), still have the Corvette I bought myself as a college graduation present, and have a number of bikes that I’ve owned for over 20 years. The problem with this packrat nature is I don’t have time to maintain everything. Hanging onto old stuff also keeps me from experiencing other fun stuff.
With this RZ500, I thoroughly enjoyed all the time I spent working on it. I don’t remember getting frustrated with it along the way as often times happens. Steady improvement was made along the way and I’m extremely happy and proud of with what I ended up with. I DO remember a boat-load of buyer remorse the day I bought it (maybe even the whole next week!), but this bike has surpassed all of my wishes when the decision was made to buy it.
What is happening with the RD/RZ500 values is certainly coming into play, but possibly not in the way you might think. Sure, I stand to make a few bucks if I sell it now and that’s great, but I actually liked the situation better when these bikes had lower values. That probably sounds strange, but two things come into play when values are elevated. First, I feel much more apprehensive about riding the bike and possibly damaging it, and that diminishes the enjoyment. Second, spare parts prices elevate proportionally with the bike values. This means the bike ends up costing more to maintain as parts wear out from use or just plain fail from old age. When I’m hunting for a part on ebay or somewhere, I enjoy finding good deals that I can work with. Those days are long gone with this RZ500. Parts are rare and there are many people looking for them with bigger wallets than me.
I will always have my RZ350 to put 2-stroke smiles on my face. I am sort of an OEM guy, and I have all the parts to transform the 350 in bone stock condition if I wish. I have very few spares the 500, so it doesn’t exactly “fit” with the rest of my vehicles. I love when I can find the original dealer brochure for a vehicle and it matches what I own. Honestly, I think this RZ500 belongs out on a track competing in vintage racing, but I doubt I will ever give that a try.
The bottom line is, you will likely see this bike up for sale soon as I “thin the herd” a little bit. I just bought a new(er) Triumph Tiger 1200 so need to make room and time for it. I have two Kawasaki H1-500’s I would like to restore someday, my Corvette could use some work, and of course my Chevelle needs nearly EVERYTHING done to it after so many years of neglect (I still plan for it to be my daily driver when I retire). LOL. I will never run out of projects!
I am going to struggle coming up with a selling price for this RZ500. On one hand, it’s a resto-mod with a rebuilt title. But on the other, it runs great and I think it looks fabulous too. Any advice on value would be appreciated. I’m leaning towards a worth at about half of what the prime OEM examples are bringing.

Service E54 - Align front turn signals with ground...
I suppose this one is subjective. Originally when I bought the bike, I thought the signals would look better parallel to the ground. But now, I could go either way. So what’s the point of changing something that you are okay with? This one is finished before it even got started!
E54 Total Cost: US$0.00 (Nothing changed)

Sounds like whether you sell it, or not, you should have gone with an OEM style paint job.lost1750GTV wrote: ↑Thu Sep 16, 2021 2:27 pmI am sort of an OEM guy, and I have all the parts to transform the 350 in bone stock condition if I wish. Good to see you, smoker.
So there's no confusion, I didn't say that, maybe I was quoting " too few real bike issues nut" ( see last signal light post). On what page I dont know.
I haven't had a 350(lc) since 1984.

Re: Operation: MOSQUITO CONTROL BIKE - Florida RZ500 Project (52X)
It would have been fun to see it in some other colors. I'm not sure the typical red/white/blue OEM scheme would look proper on this bike with its aftermarket bodywork and other bits, but maybe. My first choice would be a yellow/black RZ350 theme since the bike is pretty far from OEM anyways.
Honestly though, the yellow/blue color scheme has grown on me over the years, especially with the pin striping and decals added to finish it off. It certainly is one of a kind! And I would have had a really tough time spraying over perfectly fine glossy paint (from a psychological standpoint). LOL

No worries, he was just quoting me from post 252. Your quote must have gotten mixed up in there somehow.lost1750GTV wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 3:10 pm Good to see you, smoker.

"too few real bike issues nut"... Hey, I resemble that remark! LOL Actually, I'm going down through my task list on page 2 and trying to address all the remaining items.

Service M56 - Kick Starter...
I’m getting down to the really minor stuff on this bike, and that’s a good thing. The kick starter works fine, but the clear coat has turned yellow and was missing altogether in spots. I figured it would look better without anything on it and at the pampered point in this bike’s life, it really doesn’t need any protection.
Here is an old shot of what I started with. It’s hard to see the yellowing in this picture.
Picture 329
Some water-based paint remover took the old clear off nicely in about 10 minutes.
After a good wipe down, lube and re-installation, this is what I ended up with… (somewhat) shiny aluminum again!

Picture 775
M56 Total Cost: US$0.00 (Just a little paint remover and elbow grease)

It looks like getting ready to sell videos.
And you are selling the 955 also?
The 500 looks great BTW. Good luck.
