Offset Cylinders

#1 Post by kweitzel » Fri Jan 28, 2022 1:47 pm

Wondering if anyone has tried to offset cylinders on an RZ? We race snowmobiles and have had good results with offset cylinders by 2-3 mm. Seems to straighten out the push on the rod and piston wear is reduced. I know several manufacturer's doing this on 4 stroke's for years now. Thanks.

Hi, any chance you can elaborate a bit please? Not sure I understand what you are saying…..
Thanks!

By moving the cylinders 2-3 mm towards the exhaust side where they attach to the crankcase you straighten the rod angle out so during the power stroke the piston is pushing down on the rod at less of an angle.

Thanks! I get it now. Some have used longer rods on highly modded engines to presumably get the same effect. Not aware of moving cylinders for the reasons stated, but sounds interesting along with some practical obstacles to overcome.

On the original rear cylinders, piston pin is offseted.

For people that are not familiar with cranktrain mechanical properties.
Here's a pic to visualize the cylinder offset

On the RD500 this is already done by an offset between piston and pin axis.

Only on the rear ones.
