Clear coat on tank corroded from gas
I have a classic orange 75 rd350 and the clear coat on the tank is eaten away from a leaky gas cap. The paint is fairly intact. Is there a way to remove the dirty edges of the clear coat and reapply?

Sadly clear coat lifting on cars is much the same and there isnt really a good way to fix it.

I have used both the Spraymax solid colour with clear coat on top with a lot of success, and with just the base colour too
I did the clutch cover and the top engine cover, rims, sprocket carrier and other bits on my RZ F1
It comes out of the can very nicely and gives really good coverage and an excellent finish, very little orange peel
I’d practice your technique with some other rattle cans first, it’s easy to apply too much paint and runs are painfully hard to remove
The difference in sprayability between the Spraymax and other acrylic cans is chalk and cheese though
It is a two part paint and needs activated by a clever dual valve system, you really need to give the can a good long shake before adding the catalyst, then shake again, you then have about 6 hours depending on temperature to use it, at least in hotter climates, it says it can be up to 48 hrs at 20 c
ventilation and ventilators are strongly advised, you also need to cover up anything that doesn’t need painting as there is a fair amount of overspray, hence the ventilation, ask me how I know
The sad news is I doubt you will save your clear coat on the tank, once it starts peeling there is no stopping it
The only way I think is to strip the tank and repaint, there again I’m not a spray painter, as Jon says you only need to look at cars that have the same issue

I just dealt with the same problem on a bike I restored. My painter said it needed to be repainted as all the clear would have to be removed. He repainted and cleared and matched the other bodywork perfectly.
