FZ600: Buy the bike or just swingarm?

#1 Post by RD4ME » Sat Feb 04, 2023 9:20 am

I have an RZ project bike I'm going to assemble in the next couple of years. It's a former race bike and is collection of parts. It will be a "Thrasher" bike not an original restoration.

I want to do the FZ600 swing-arm conversion and have found one for sale with the Wheel and Shock. It's not expensive. The swingarm is currently on a "rough" but largely complete, non-running 86 FZ600.

For the same price as just the rear-end, the seller will sell me the whole bike.

Now, I don't need another junk bike cluttering-up my (wife's) yard. But I was wondering if there were other common RZ parts that might make it worth taking?

I was thinking just of disassembling it for the metric nuts and bolts might be worthwhile - since I'm always running short of them and they cost a fortune to buy from a dealer.

What do you think?

seems like there were a lot of RZ/FJ/FZ/XJ parts in common in the 80's.
I'd take the whole thing and salvage the common parts then ebay the rest as a bonus.
stuff like a speedo drive, kick stand switch, cush drive, switches, brake parts, the screws that hold the rotors onto wheels, maybe even the rotors themselves are commonly shared depending on year.

I like the footpegs and brackets of the FZ; smaller than RZ stuff and a simple, flat mounting plate with two bolt holes. OEM parts still available last time I checked. If you get the whole bike, you can just transfer the whole swingarm, wheel, cush drive and brake setup, easy-peasy. As you probably know, you're going to want an adjustable-length shock to get your ride height correct.

I’d buy the whole bike. Hands down.
