Stand ...alone suggestion

#1 Post by JeffCooper » Sat Aug 05, 2023 10:07 pm

Problem statement: I need both wheels off the ground sonI can pull the forks and rebuild, fix steering stop on the frame and do the bearings in the tripletree and wheel. At the same time, I want to do the rear wheel, bearing, etc. Tires on both ends.

Should I get something like this? Handy because it gets the whole bike off the ground, and has wheels to scootch it out of the way. I'll have to take the pipes I guess

Oh! And I have a set of T-Rex-Racing paddock stands - rear, front under axle, and front under triple tree. They don't help in this case either.

Abba Sky Lift. With the RD350 fittings. Done. But, can/will you shell out the coin? Guessing over $800 delivered.

Ever had a bike fall, or almost fall off a lift/stand? Lots of us have, and won't forget it.

If you don't get a lift/stand like the Abba- I highly recommend lifting the front only, then lifting the rear only. And it's easy. A simple scissor jack under the frame, and a secure wheel chock. My wheel chock has tie-down hooks, and is very secure.

Thanks smoker. Yes, I almost lost a bike off a stand. My T-Rex stands are just like Bulldog stands and scare the shit out of me. Especially the front. I'll check out the Abba Sky Lift. Appreciate the tip!

This pic the bike is on it's center stand with a bottle jack (with a piece of wood between the jack and engine case).

Can't seem to find the pic with the same bike on 2 pitbull stands as you described. Didn't you have another similar thread (where I put that photo)?

Hi Ken - thst wasn't my topic, but i did see your Bulldog complete stand. Thanks for posting that pic. Perhaps that is how I'll proceed and just park my Truck (Lightning) in the drive while I finish the work on the bike. Someplace in this thread is my bike on the center stand and the forks on a milkcrate. :-)

Thanks!

I've used one of those mc lifts (as in your first pic) for everything from a dirt bike to a Harley without any problems at all. Mine has a provision for tie-down straps from the bike to the stand, not sure if the HF model has that or not. I've owned one of those HF work stands for 20 years or more, too, and it's quite handy. In fact, my RZ is on it right now.
BUT... I agree with Smoker that using the center stand then lifting one end at a time is the best and safest way to go.

RE: Using the red bike lift with the Front wheel off: If you have a center stand, you can secure the rear of the bike with tie-down straps from a location on the rear sub-frame or footrest brackets to the eyelets at the rear of the lift. Or you can put the bike on the lift backward and clamp the rear tire in that clamp at the front of the lift. If you like the idea of a lift to get the bike up where it is easier to work on, make sure the bike is secure to the lift. If the bike falls from an elevated position, you'll be very sad.

you can also get a helper to sit on a bike with a center stand and then lean back. Front wheel can then be removed... make sure they use the toilet before you start work...

Not advocating this is the best way, but will get you out of a hole if you need to do something quickly with limited tools.
