My Derbi GPR with CR engine

#1 Post by 2manyprjx » Sun Aug 28, 2022 1:50 am

I've decided to sell my Derbi GPR50 that I modified with a Honda CR125 engine. This bike was a break from the normal winter resto project. I wanted to do something a little more creative. I do all my own work including machining, fabrication, painting, and replating. The bike was stripped all the way down, original engine mounts completely cut out, and new mounts fabricated. Engine was rebuilt with a new Wiseco crank, Nemura top end kit, and aftermarket clutch basket. A CR Pro Circuit pipe was cut apart and welded back together in the new shape. For the cooling system, I pieced together a thermostat housing with a 160 thermostat and reused the original radiator. Electrically, I used a CR stator with a lighting coil and the lighting coil output was routed to the reg/rec to charge the battery. Headlights are LED's to compensate for the lower stator output. Battery charges normally. Wheels have been upgraded to 17-inch from the stock 16-inch with new Pirelli rubber. Sprockets were upgraded to 428 along with the strongest 428 o-ring chain DID makes. To increase braking power, I installed a much larger Aprilla RS125 front rotor and fabbed up a new caliper bracket. There's many more mods but I'm trying to keep it brief. The paint is really shiny but there are some small defects caused by static build up on the plastic when I painted it. The Faux fuel tank had previous damage that was poorly repaired. I couldn't locate a replacement so I had to use it. If you look close, you can see the previous repairs. I'll call it a two foot paint job. Looks really nice from three feet or more.

It's a hoot to ride. Just pin the throttle and start shifting. Bike is located northeast of Indianapolis and has an Indiana title in my name. Price is $4000. If you're interested, send me a pm. I have a video of the bike starting and running.

Agreed Paul. That looks like a ton of fun. Do you know if it could be titled here?

Thanks guys. I really enjoyed building it but I just don't get it out to play with it enough. Hopefully, I can find someone who'll appreciate it and have fun with it. My buddies are telling me I'm going to regret selling it.

It has a 17 digit VIN. If these were sold new in CA, then why not?

These bikes were sold new in California?

I have a hard time believing that.

Also, it has an engine swap. When I've registered my bikes in Cali, both the DMV and AAA always check the frame VIN and the engine VIN to make sure they match.

CR125 engine is a dirt bike engine. Can't legally get that registered for the street in Cali, even with a custom build application.

Definitely a cool bike. Probably too small for me, but I like it. Nice work, for sure.

I got an LC with a banshee motor in it registered 3 months ago with no probs. CHP inspected it and zero probs.

Sure. Depends where you go and who inspects it. But you know it's not legal in Cali to register a dirt bike engine for the street.

Where I live, I can only go to the DMV specified by my address on the paperwork. I know, because I've tried going to other DMVs. Also, when the engine numbers don't match, the DMV sends you straight to CHP inspection, even with the correct type of engine. All special construction vehicles such as this go to CHP inspection, here. If they don't check the engine numbers, how do they even know if it's a special construction vehicle? The CHP here is strictly by the book.

I need to move. How's the weather been up there?

Weather is great, Lol, Cool as always. :)

Yeah, It really does depend on the CHP, They can be tough up here,
They did question me when I registered my 2 CR500 engines in CRF250x chassis :P
