LED Headlight Bulb RZ350

#1 Post by 75RD350rider » Wed Dec 25, 2019 2:15 pm

Initially I ordered the fan type 9003 LED replacement bulb ( silver one in the picture) and installed it in my 75 RD350 with aftermarket EMGO replacement headlight bucket from Economy Cycle. It works perfect. I figured it would be even easier on the RZ since there are a lot less wires in the bucket. But I was wrong and the fan type bulb struck the back of the bucket. So I ordered the fanless LED. Both pairs of bulbs were around $20 shipped.

The fanless bulb just fits with careful wire arrangement. I test rode both bikes for 30 minutes and all is well.

The lights are very bright. I had some concerns about heat in the fanless bulb but the heat sink was barely warm after 30 minutes of operation so I think it will be fine.

Do you have links to where you purchased them?

You can also use Honda 33120-MF5-751 from a VT500 / VT700 / VT750 / VT1100 and some VF for a straight headlight swap for 73-75 RD350 . Take a standard halogen insert .

I use the copper braided led bulbs in all my bikes. They never get hot, not even warm. Great improvement over the stock bulb.

For those that have purchased the Ebay H4 Led bulb:

I suppose I must be easily confused. Do you get one or 2 bulbs with the purchase?

And since I am wondering out loud, anybody know the amp draw of the LED's? Surely must take some load off of the battery.

Way less than halogen or sealed beam. On my 75 RD 350 you could feel the difference in the motor running down the road with the halogen and if left at idle for long it would draw it down to where it would die. With the LED it runs the same headlight on or off.

I bought the LED lights with the braided heat sinks and those do get quite hot if there is no air moving over them. I had planned to put one on my LC but am concerned the hot heat sinks might melt some of the wiring inside the headlight bucket.

The braided heat sink type bulbs are great on my 90 RZ and FZ750, where the heat sinks sit outside of the headlight bucket.

Apart from LED being efficient and all that, I am thinking that LEDs are really no gain for an old bike when it comes to power consumption from the generator or am I wrong?
This is what I figure;
1. The generator is a constant output type
2. The regulator simply sends any excess charge to ground to create heat in order to keep voltage to an acceptable level by voltage drop in the gen windings
3. If you send less charge to head light due to LED, more has to go through the regulator to give the same result at any given rpm.
4 more power through regulator = hotter and more strain to it.
5. Even more risk of damages via poor grounding from the increased amps through this channel
6. Conclusion: no actual powersaving from LED replacements.
7. There are many other advantages by LED still.

Do you agree with me on the above, and if not feel free to pitch in.

Regards
Kjell
